Now more than ever, employees are choosing to work remotely. What does that mean for your human resources team? Jan Marrs, talent director for Mize CPAs Inc., will share strategies and best practices for managing a remote or hybrid team.

As Talent Director and head of Human Resources at Mize CPAs Inc., Jan is responsible for talent planning, leadership and all aspects of HR including talent development and acquisition, performance management, compensation/benefits and HR operations for Mize employees.

Yvonne Brownell, CPA, CMA, CGMA

Tax Implications of COVID-19 Funding and State Retirement Plan Mandates

Yvonne Brownell is a Shareholder of Mize CPAs Inc and manages the tax practice of our Topeka office. In addition to overseeing tax planning, preparation and research, Yvonne focuses on income taxation and has extensive knowledge with trust and estate taxation and nonprofit tax reporting.

Yvonne will discuss the income tax implications of the various funding sources made available during the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the impact of payroll tax credits. She will also discuss the considerations of setting up a retirement plan as more states are beginning to mandate employers provide them for their employees.

Amber West, MBA

Payroll & EFMLA Tax Reporting 

Amber West is a member of the Mize CPAs Tax department and has extensive knowledge in the area of payroll tax reporting. Most recently, she’s become the Mize resource on the payroll reporting considerations of the new EFMLA requirements of the CARES Act.

Amber will provide an update on various payroll tax reporting considerations and share the latest information from the IRS on tax-related scams.

Kerri is a shareholder in the Kansas City office of law firm Ogletree Deakins. She concentrates her practice in the labor and employment arena in the exclusive representation of management.  Kerri advises and defends clients with regard to all aspects of the employer/employee relationship, including compliance with non-discrimination statutes, the FMLA, ADA, FLSA, NLRA, and state and local employment statutes. She has assisted clients in proactively addressing issues involving the development of union-free operations, and the preparation of employee handbooks and procedure manuals.

Kerri also devotes a significant amount of her practice to preventative training and counseling for her clients’ supervisors and management on a variety of employment-law-related topics.

Payroll Compliance Update

Curtis Leiker is a leader in Mize’s growing payroll team of 30+ associates, processing payroll for businesses in a variety of industries in nearly every state. In his role, he advises clients on various payroll issues including reporting requirements, implementing new sick leave mandates and more.

Curtis will share updates on various payroll-related topics including compliance, annual limit adjustments and year-end reminders.
